Russia vetoed this Friday at the UN Security Council a resolution condemning the annexation referendums held by Moscow in four regions of Ukraine, in a vote in which Brazil, China, Gabon and India abstained.

The text, proposed by the United States and Albania and put to the vote of the 15 members of the Council, obtained 10 votes in favor, one against (Russia) and four abstentions.

The resolution condemned “illegal referendums”, which “have no validity” and “cannot form the basis of any alteration of the status of these regions”, including “any alleged annexation”.

It also called for Russia to “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its military forces” from Ukraine.

“They intentionally force us to use our veto so that they can launch into lyrical exercises about the fact that we abuse our right”, attacked the Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia, who denounced that the resolution constituted a “hostile action by the West” and a “provocation ” and was a “new example” of his “double standards”.

According to him, the referendums “complied with the norms and principles of international law” in the face of the opinion of Western countries, they have branded them a farce and have assured that they “will never recognize” the Russian annexation of these territories in Ukraine.

Shortly before the Security Council meeting in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin had signed in the Kremlin the annexation of the Ukrainian regions where the referendums were held between September 23 and 27.

Putin has hinted that since the territories have been declared part of Russia, the Kremlin could legitimately resort to nuclear weapons to defend them.

US President Joe Biden affirmed this Friday that the United States and NATO “will not be intimidated” by the Russian president and warned that the Atlantic alliance will defend “every inch” of its territory.

Deal

At the Security Council meeting, some members complained that the body is helping to exacerbate the conflict instead of quelling it.

Although the Russian veto left no room for doubt, more interest was aroused by the position of countries such as China, which is accused by Westerners of being too conciliatory with Russia.

The representative of China, Zhang Jun, after reiterating the message repeated by Beijing that “the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be safeguarded” called for “all efforts to be made to de-escalate” the conflict and asked ” a political solution.

Brazil, one of the four countries that abstained, justified its decision in that “the scope and language” of the text put to the vote “did not favor an environment conducive to a solution to the Ukraine conflict” and complained of the lack of time to consult it.
