Russia: the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta threatened with losing its broadcasting license

The policeman of the Russian media requested Thursday, July 28 the cancellation of the authorizations of diffusion of the Internet site and the paper edition of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta. He had already suspended his work in Russia at the end of March, in the midst of a crackdown on critics of the war in Ukraine.

On his Telegram account, the editorial staff of the newspaper announced (in Russian) that Constable Roskomnadzor had filed a motion in court to have the site’s broadcasting license revoked www.novayagazeta.ruwhich will theoretically prohibit the publication of journalistic content there.

Investigations into the corruption of Russian elites

This site offers free and open access to the archives of the newspaper, renowned for its in-depth investigations into the corruption of Russian elites and serious human rights violations, particularly in Chechnya.

The Roskomnadzor agency, quoted by the TASS agency, also said on Thursday that it requested the revocation of the license to distribute the printed edition of Novaya Gazeta, on the grounds of not having received in time “editorial statutes”.

Last weekend, the Russian authorities blocked another website launched by Novaya Gazeta and dedicated to a new paper magazine, Novaya Rasskaz-Gazetapublished by its editorial office in Russia.
