Russia Crimea: Amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the world’s eyes are now on the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula, where a fire and explosion at a mysterious ammunition storage site left two people injured. This is the second such incident in Crimea in a week. The local governor said that about 2,000 people have been evacuated from the surrounding areas. In videos of the fire and explosion posted on social media, plumes of smoke can be seen rising and several explosions can be heard from behind. “Russian-occupied Crimea has become a warehouse of explosions and the threat of death to invaders and thieves is extremely high,” Mikhailo Podolyak, adviser to Ukraine’s president, tweeted in cryptic words.

According to reports in Russian media, a fire and explosions broke out in the village of Mayskoye in the Zhankoi province of Crimea early Tuesday. Referring to the period before Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, Podolyak said, “In the morning near Zhankoi, people’s eyes opened with explosions. Be reminded: Crimea from a mango country is the Black Sea, mountains, entertainment and tourism.’

fire at ammunition site

Russia’s Defense Ministry said the fire broke out at a “temporary ammunition storage site of an army unit”. “Due to the fire, there were explosions in the ammunition kept there,” he said. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Zhankoi Province is located in the north of the Crimean peninsula and about 50 kilometers from the Russian-occupied Kherson province of southern Ukraine. Kyiv has intensified attacks in the region in recent months, targeting Russian forces and ammunition warehouses there.

Sergei Aksionov, Russia’s appointed governor for Crimea, said two people had been injured and local residents were being evacuated from the area as the blasts continued. Some residential buildings near the site were damaged and around 2,000 people have been evacuated from the surrounding areas, he said. According to Russian media, railway tracks passing through Mayskoye were also damaged. Ukrainian officials have not yet publicly claimed responsibility for the blasts.

The peninsula is important for both the countries

The Crimean peninsula has strategic and symbolic importance for both the countries. The Kremlin has demanded that Ukraine recognize Crimea as part of Russia, while Ukraine has called for the Russians to be driven out of the Crimean peninsula and all other occupied territories.

Last week, there were several explosions at the Saki air force base near the village of Novofyodorovka in Crimea. The Russian military has attributed the incident to an accidental detonation of munitions, but the incident appears to be the result of a Ukrainian attack. Kyiv claimed nine Russian planes were destroyed in the blasts.
