Russia calls on other countries to follow its example and recognize Donetsk and Luhansk

Russia called on other countries on Tuesday to follow its example and recognize the independence of the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine.

"Russia calls on other countries to follow its example"the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, signed two decrees the day before in which he recognizes the independence of the two separatist regions, a decision condemned by the international community as a violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

According to Foreign Affairs, it was the "only possible step" in view of the aggravation of the situation.

"The Russian head of state received requests for recognition from the leaders and residents of the two republics"points out the statement that recalls that the Duma (Lower House) also asked Putin to do the same.

"That decision by the President of Russia was dictated primarily by humanitarian reasons and the desire to protect the civilian population of Donetsk and Lugansk, including hundreds of thousands of Russian citizens, from a real threat to their lives and security."adds the statement.

According to Moscow, the "current ukrainian regime" he did not give up his attempts to resolve the Donbas issue by force.

Instead of establishing a political dialogue, Kiev chose to start "a punitive military operation" against his fellow citizens, "i.e. civil war".

"Since the beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, Russia has made insistent efforts to resolve it through diplomatic and peaceful means."assured the Foreign Ministry, which accused Kiev of breaching the Minsk peace accords.

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, also today blamed Ukraine for "bury" the Minsk agreements.

"They threaten us with sanctions of all kinds. Hellish sanctions or as they say ‘the mother of all sanctions’. We are used to it. The president has already expressed our position, we know that there would be sanctions anyway. With reason or without"Lavrov settled in statements to Russian public television.
