Russia and Ukraine agree to maintain ceasefire

Talks between Ukraine and Russia took place on Wednesday at the French presidential palace in Paris. Representatives from Germany and France were also present.

This is the first time that talks have taken place between the two countries since the massive deployment of troops by Russia on the Ukrainian border. Andrei Yermak, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, said the talks were a clear signal of a desire for a peaceful solution.

According to the German broadcaster, Russian Ambassador Dmitry Kozak said after the meeting that despite all differences over the interpretation of the conflict, we agreed that all parties should maintain the ceasefire in accordance with the agreements reached in eastern Ukraine. Will

“We hope our comrades have understood our arguments and we will get results in two weeks,” he said.

A statement from the Presidential Palace in Paris said that the diplomats unconditionally support the ceasefire and fully adhere to the steps taken to strengthen the ceasefire on July 22, 2020, despite differences over other issues related to the implementation of the Minsk Agreement. Will

Russia and Ukraine signed the Minsk agreement in 2014 and 2015. Although major attacks by both sides have stopped since then, there have been sporadic clashes.

The ceasefire agreement was aimed at ending the conflict between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists. But in recent years, both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of violating the ceasefire.
