Russia: 2,500 seals found dead on the edge of the Caspian

At least 2,500 seals of an endangered species have been found dead on Russian beaches by the Caspian Sea, the local Ecology Ministry said on Sunday (December 4th). The latter has not yet determined the causes of the tragedy. The bodies of the mammals were discovered on tens of kilometers of coast in Dagestan, specified the ministry of this Russian republic of the Caucasus. Laboratory tests are in progress.

According to the head of the Russian Nature Monitoring Agency, Svetlana Radionova, the cause “main” envisaged for the moment would be that of death by asphyxiation during a release of gas at the bottom of the Caspian Sea. Interviewed on the Russian television channel Rossiya 24, she declared that it would be necessary to wait until the end of the week to have the first results of the analyzes in progress.

Svetlana Radionova recalled that a similar carnage, with almost 2 000 seals found dead, took place at the end of 2020 on the beaches of Dagestan and Azerbaijan. The Caspian seal, the only species of seal present in this closed sea which borders five countries (Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan), is threatened by both pollution and poaching.
