Rui Oliveira, the talented rider from UAE Emirates, found himself slipping down the Renewi Tour standings on Thursday. He dropped to fourth place overall after a thrilling second stage. The day’s victory went to Dutch sprinter Olav Kooij from Visma-Lease a bike, who also snatched the race leader’s jersey.
The stage covered 172.7 kilometers, stretching between the Belgian cities of Blankenberge and Ardooie. Kooij powered through the finish line in 3 hours, 35 minutes, and 7 seconds. The Czech rider Pavel Bittner of Picnic PostNL and Belgian Milan Fretin from Cofidis finished second and third, respectively, crossing the line with the exact same time as Kooij.
Looking at the overall standings, Olav Kooij now holds the top spot. He shares the same overall time as two Belgian riders. Tim Merlier of Soudal Quick-Step, who led after the first stage, is right there. Dries de Bondt from Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale also sits tied with Kooij; he’s the one who leapfrogged Rui Oliveira in the standings.
Oliveira, an Olympic madison champion alongside Iuri Leitão, fought hard. He even tried to pick up valuable bonus seconds during the intermediate sprints. Despite his efforts, he landed in fourth place, now just two seconds behind the new race leader, Olav Kooij. That’s how tight the competition is getting!
Looking ahead, riders will tackle the third stage on Friday. It runs for 181.8 kilometers, stretching from Aalter to Geraardsbergen. The course promises a real challenge, with several tough mountain climbs packed into the final section. It’s built much like a classic Belgian one-day race, which means fireworks are expected.
