Rui Borges is a man who knows how to spot a shift in the wind. The Sporting coach is ready to leave the team’s recent outing against Estoril in the rearview mirror. His focus now snaps squarely onto tomorrow’s big Champions League match against Napoli. This second-round league phase clash is set to be a true test.
Speaking to Sport TV, Borges described the upcoming game as “difficult.” He sees it as a natural challenge against the reigning Italian champions. Borges expects a “special, different environment” in Naples. Still, he promised maximum motivation from his Lions. Their aim? Nothing less than a victory.
Borges recently spoke about his team’s performance against Estoril. Some called it a critique, but the coach quickly set the record straight. “It wasn’t a criticism, far from it,” he explained. “My team has behaved excellently. It was a wake-up call, that’s all. We are used to a certain level, and in that game, we fell asleep a bit.” He added that any true criticism would stay within the team’s walls. “Tomorrow, the team will be sharp.”
He can feel their energy. “They are happy, eager to play,” Borges noted. “They want to do better than they did against Estoril.” The players know their last game was not up to scratch. They share the coach’s frustration. “But that’s in the past now,” he insisted. “What matters is winning. These are different games. They will be super motivated.” After all, it is the Champions League, against the Italian champions. “We expect a difficult game, but we want a positive result, and that means winning.”
Championship Clash
When asked about favorites, Borges dismissed the idea. “I don’t think about that,” he said. “It’s the Italian champions facing the Portuguese champions. It will be a special, unique atmosphere. Two great teams will play, and I hope it’s a fantastic game.” He acknowledged the difficulties ahead. “But I believe we will be prepared for them.” The demands of a European game are different, he noted. “Our motivation will be at its peak to overcome a great team.”
This isn’t just another match. It’s a chance to show their quality against top-tier opponents. Borges doesn’t see it as a chance to rewrite past narratives. “I don’t look at it that way,” he stated plainly. “Last season, we lost games too. I don’t dwell on the past.” He recalled good performances against Benfica and FC Porto, even if the results didn’t favor them. “That’s how it goes sometimes.” This is a new opponent, a different competition. “We must switch on the chip for demanding excellence and be ready,” he urged. “And play a good game.”
Team Selection
The coach also touched on player availability. Diomande, a key name, has been training. “He will be in the squad for the game,” Borges confirmed. However, there are many considerations. “He won’t start.”
Borges has often rotated between Fresneda and Vagiannidis. The question of who would start tomorrow was met with a clear philosophy. “The most important thing is that everyone is connected,” he explained. “They all have to be ready to play. The best team will take the field.”
