Royals beat Detroit, Pineda returns with a loss

Vinnie Pasquatino hit his first major league home run and Hunter Dozier followed with a drive into the bullpen to lead Brad Keller and the Kansas City Royals to a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

Brad Keller (3-9) gave up five hits and two walks in six shutout innings. He has won two of the last three starts.

Keller left the mound after hitting rookie Spencer Torkelson in the helmet with an 88 mph pitch in the seventh inning. Torkelson remained on his feet and walked off the pitch.

The Tigers scored in the ninth on Eric Haase’s sacrifice fly. Royals closer Scott Barlow walked Riley Greene, who drove in the go-ahead run at the plate, but retired Willi Castro with the next pitch to reach 11 saves.

Michael Pineda (1-3) threw 65 pitches in his return from the disabled list, allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings. He struck out three without giving away a walk.

For the Tigres Willi Castro 3-1 and Javier Báez 4-0; Venezuelans Víctor Reyes 1-0, Miguel Cabrera 4-1 and Harold Castro 4-0.
