Rostic’s, the replacement for KFC, has opened its first restaurant in Russia

The first Rostic’s restaurant, supposed to replace KFC in Russia, opened on Tuesday in Moscow. The American fast-food chain withdrew from the country in response to the war in Ukraine.

Certain elements of the decor have obviously been modified, but the design of the logo and the packaging, with red and white stripes, is reminiscent of the style of KFC. “The sign is changing but the restaurant must keep its authenticity”, explained to RBK Konstantin Kotov, co-owner of the Russian company Smart Service, which bought KFC restaurants from the Yum group in April 2023! Brands.

The return of Rostic’s, quite a symbol

According to him, a hundred KFC restaurants are to be relaunched under the Rostic’s brand by the end of the summer. In total, KFC had more than 1,100 establishments in Russia, the conversion of which will take place gradually. The menu for the new restaurants is identical to that of KFC, with two exceptions: Twister and Boxmaster sandwiches have been renamed Chef-roll and Rostmaster.

A fast-food chain Rostic’s already existed in Russia from 1993 to 2012, but its name was then written in Cyrillic. She had been bought by Yum! Brands in 2012. For many, the resurrection of Rostic’s, the first fast food chain to open in post-Soviet Russia, therefore refers to the first years after the fall of the USSR.

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, many Western companies have left Russia. Like KFC, McDonald’s and Starbucks sold their local business to Russian businessmen, but not the right to use their brand names. Russian McDonald’s were thus replaced by “Vkousno i totchka” and Starbucks by “Stars Coffee” in the summer of 2022.
