Football star Cristiano Ronaldo will be available for the 2026 World Cup after FIFA imposed a single-game suspension for an on-field incident, a penalty lighter than typically expected for violent conduct.
The decision means the Portuguese forward has already served his ban. He missed his team’s 9-1 victory against Armenia.
The suspension stemmed from an expulsion during a previous match against Ireland.
FIFA regulations usually stipulate a three-game suspension for violent conduct. Such a penalty could have sidelined Ronaldo for the initial matches of the upcoming World Cup.
However, FIFA’s interpretation of the incident led to a reduced penalty for the player. This ensures his full availability for the tournament.
