Roglic, new situation: on the first day of rest in red

La Vuelta reaches its first day of rest, with Almería as the majority headquarters of all the teams (others, such as Ineos, in Cabo de Gata) for an active rest, since there were many squads that went out to shoot in the morning on the shores of the seaport. Some of them, such as those of the DSM and the Ag2r, took the opportunity to immortalize the Almeria cathedral and other monuments of the city. As for sports, Primoz Roglic arrives on the first day of rest in the red jersey. In his two previous appearances in La Vuelta, which ended with the Slovenian at the top of the podium in Madrid, and strange as it sounds, he never made it to this day as a leader.

In his first appearance in the Spanish round, the Slovenian was second to the first day of rest. The first, at that time, was Nairo Quintana, who dressed in red in Andorra on an intense day for Movistar, who ordered Marc Soler to stop when he was on the run. The Catalan, who gestured gracefully at the team’s order, contributed to the Colombian’s leadership in the torrential Andorran rain. The advantage was minimal: six seconds over a Roglic that, after the day of break, blew up La Vuelta. It was in the time trial ending in Pau, in which he swept to take the victory, outstripping his first pursuer (Valverde, at 1:52) by almost two minutes, and donning a red jersey that he would not take off until Madrid. That would be his only stage win in that edition.

In 2020, the situation was different, since that of the Jumbo He achieved no more and no less than four stages, but he was also not the leader on the rest day. In the autumn Vuelta last year, there was only one rest day, since it was an edition with 18 stages. Roglic lost the lead just before the break, in the Angliru stage, but was only ten seconds behind Richard Carapaz. And the next day, as in 2019, against the clock … and knocked on Roglic’s table. He prevailed at the Ézaro viewpoint, dressed in red and, after a nice hand-in-hand with Carapaz, with a final firework at La Covatilla, maintained the leadership until Madrid.

Now, in 2021, the leader arrives … almost by inertia. It was from day one, with his triumph in the Burgos chrono. Maybe too soon. That is why he commented on several occasions that he did not mind losing the leadership in the early stages and thus not forcing his team to do so much work. That’s how it went. With a breakout, Rein Taramäe wore red for two days, Kenny Elissonde was another … and, in Cullera, only holding on, Roglic again rose to the leadership. At the Alto de Velefique, the Slovenian found that he will have as great rivals to complete his ‘triplet’ the Movistar, Enric Mas and Superman, without losing sight of the powerful Ineos de Bernal and Adam Yates … although at the moment they have the Australian Haig, Landa’s teammate in Bahrain, ahead. There is a lot of cloth left to cut until Santiago.
