Fresh from claiming the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2024, Spanish midfielder Rodri has weighed in on who he thinks deserves the coveted award this year. And he’s got a Portuguese player, Vitinha, squarely in his sights as a strong contender. That’s a significant nod from a reigning football king.
Rodri wasn’t just throwing names out there. Ahead of Spain’s upcoming game against Turkey, he offered a thoughtful breakdown of his picks. “If it’s about who’s likable, I’d hope Lamine Yamal or Pedri would win,” he explained. “But for their pure sporting achievements, for what they truly accomplished last season? Then Ousmane Dembélé or Vitinha get my vote.”
It’s fitting that Rodri is discussing comebacks and top form, as he’s been on quite a journey himself. The Manchester City star faced a tough season, sidelined by a left knee ligament rupture suffered a year ago. That kind of injury can truly test a player’s resolve and patience.
But Rodri is back, and he sounds more determined than ever. “I still want to be the same player, and I want to return to the level I was at before,” he said. “I’m incredibly happy to be back with the national team. It’s been a very long year for me, and now my batteries are completely recharged.”
