Rockies blank White Sox 3-0 in pitching duel

Kyle Freeland outpitched Dylan Cease and put the Chicago White Sox’s bid for a playoff spot on hold, throwing a shutout 6 2/3 innings Wednesday in the Rockies’ victory in Colorado 3-0.

The White Sox fell four games behind AL Central leader Cleveland with 19 games remaining. Chicago travels to Cleveland for a make-up game on Thursday, then returns to home park for a three-game series beginning Sept. 20.

Freeland (9-9) frustrated Chicago’s lineup that went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. He pitched nearly seven innings on seven hits and struck out five.

Freeland has posted a 2.17 ERA in his last four starts. Chicago is 20-9 in Cease starts.

Daniel Bard struck out three in the ninth to reach 30 saves.

Cease (14-7), an AL Cy Young contender, threw 56 pitches in the first two innings.

For the Rockies, Venezuelan Yonathan Daza 4-2 with an RBI.

For the White Sox, Venezuelan Elvis Andrus 4-2. Dominican Eloy Jimenez 4-1. Cubans Luis Robert 4-1, José Abreu 3-0 and Yasmani Grandal 1-0.
