Roberto Martínez no seguirá como el director técnico de Bélgica

Coach Roberto Martinez will no longer continue as Belgium manager after the team’s early elimination from the World Cup.

“That was my last game with the national team,” said Martínez after the goalless draw against Croatia that sealed the elimination of the Belgians on Thursday.

The Spanish coach led Belgium to third place in the 2018 World Cup. He was in charge for six years.

Martínez said that he made the decision to leave “before the World Cup”.

“I always work for the long term,” she said, holding back tears. “Since 2018, I have received many offers to manage at club level. But I wanted to be loyal.”

“I’m not giving up,” he added. “I have reached the end of my contract.”

Martinez’s departure coincides with the twilight of Belgium’s ‘Golden Generation’, which brought together a range of talented attacking players including Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Dries Mertens.

Belgium held the top spot in the FIFA rankings for four years of the Martinez era, but never established itself in a major tournament.

“I am a person who likes to build things,” he said. “I arrived with the well-defined mission of qualifying and participating in a World Cup. We got the bronze medal and I was left with the desire to try it again”.

“It has been a true happiness to have left an incredible legacy. I know that for some the legacy is only measured by the title of a great tournament. I see it differently, ”he added.

Martínez played and managed soccer in England before being signed by Belgium in 2016. He still resides in England.
