Roberto Firmino, closer and closer to FC Barcelona

The name of Roberto Firmino has gained strength in relation to FC Barcelona as a possible reinforcement for next summer. Although the priority of the board is to close the signing of Vitor Roque, the option of incorporating the Liverpool attacker is attractive, since he would arrive free after finishing his contract with the ‘reds’ and would bring experience and quality to the team. Firmino, who has decided to end his eight-year spell at Anfield, is considered the favorite to sign for Barça, according to reports in the English press.

The ‘Daily Mail’ newspaper announced a few months ago the Barca team’s interest in ‘Bobby’, as the board is looking for a striker who can play the role of substitute for Robert Lewandowski in the 2023/24 season. The Polish goal-scoring drop in the second half of the season has shown the need to have another ‘9’ in the squad. Without reliable options in the reserve team, the club is forced to search the market for a low-cost alternative.

For Firmino, the substitute role at Barcelona would not be a problem, as he has been a substitute at Liverpool for the past two seasons. This would avoid ego conflicts with Lewandowski and would provide Xavi Hernández with a very interesting offensive card on the bench. Although he has had less playing time lately, the 31-year-old Brazilian has managed to maintain acceptable statistics. In the 2022/23 season, he has registered 12 goals and 5 assists in 34 appearances, figures similar to those of Darwin Núñez, for whom the ‘reds’ paid a considerable sum to Benfica to make him their starting striker.

In total, Firmino has scored 110 goals in 361 appearances for Liverpool, winning all since joining the club in the summer of 2015 from Hoffenheim. In England, bookmakers place Barcelona as the leader in the “race” for his signing, ahead of teams like Napoli and Real Madrid. Real Madrid also sees in the Brazilian a viable alternative to cover the possible decline in performance of Karim Benzema, who won the Ballon d’Or. Inter, Milan and Juventus have also shown interest in Firmino, but the striker seems to prioritize playing in Spain.

Despite Barcelona’s financial needs, Vitor Roque remains the first choice for the club. The board of directors does not want to lose the opportunity to sign another young promise and Joan Laporta seeks to close the transfer of the Brazilian striker, considered the one with the greatest projection in Brazil. The objective is to integrate him into the first team this year so that he can take advantage of Lewandowski’s experience. However, Athletico Paranaense’s refusal to negotiate its price continues to be the main obstacle to finalizing the arrival of ‘Tigrinho’. Although his club is in no rush to sell him, interest from other big European teams could leave Barcelona
