The risks that keratopigmentation can pose
Dr. Federico Luengo Gimeno, doctor specializing in ophthalmology, cataracts, cornea and refractive surgery and head of the cornea and ocular surface team at Austral University Hospital, explained: Infobae What does the procedure consist of?
“It is an invasive and controversial cosmetic procedure in which pigments are applied to the cornea (the transparent layer of the eye in front of the iris). This last technique was introduced decades ago for cosmetic purposes and corneal pigmentation is based on eye tattooing,” he explained.
In addition, ophthalmologist Julián García, Secretary General of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology, said: “You should not think that this is nonsense, that it is like a tattoo.” Very serious complications can occur in the eye, even involving blindness .”
And he added that this is “a very aggressive technique, there are cases of secondary glaucoma, secondary chronic changes. That’s something I don’t recommend at all.”
Although several experts have warned about the risks that this type of procedure can bring to vision, social networks seem to ignore it and, on the contrary, it has become a big trend and we already know what happens when this happens: hundreds of people want to copy the new fashion.
