Riquelme agreed to hire Jorge Almirón to take over as DT of Boca

Although at first it was not among the favourites, Jorge Almirón was one step away from becoming the new coach of Bocaafter a series of meetings that he had with Juan Román Riquelme, the vice president of the institution.

Confirmed the refusals from Gerardo Martino and José Pekermanthe leadership of Boca intensified the efforts, which accelerated with the arrival of Almirón in the country, last Friday, after his departure from Elche in Spain, where he had a second cycle without great achievements.

The 51-year-old technical director was well positioned after what happened with Martino and Pekerman, added to the impossibility of removing Diego Martínez, from Tigre, another of those targeted by Riquelme and the Football Council. The contractual part has already been agreed and next Monday it would be presented at a press conference.

Boca was left without a coach when the leadership decided to dismiss Hugo Ibarra, after the match against Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, for the Argentine Cup, and beyond the victory, what determined his departure was the low level of the team, especially from the start. beginning of this year.

Almirón’s best moment in his extensive career as a coach was in Lanúswith whom he won three titles in 2016 and was a finalist in the Copa Libertadores de América the following year.

After that successful period, he was unable to repeat it in subsequent years, when he led Nacional de Medellín, San Lorenzo, Al Shabbab of Saudi Arabia, Elche -twice- and again Lanús.

Previously, Almirón had developed a large part of his campaign in Mexican soccer, where he directed Dorados, Veracruz, Correcaminos and Tijuana. And in Argentine soccer he also went through Defense and Justice, Godoy Cruz de Mendoza and Independiente.
