Argentine motorsport will experience a historic day on Sunday, February 13, since that day at the Ciudad de Viedma Autodrome a race will be held that will bring together only women drivers from all over the country. The automobile competition called “Government Cup of Río Negro” will take place within the framework of the “Bora Category”, which belongs to the ACTC.
“Female pilots from all over the country are going to come to share this category, it is one more step towards a more egalitarian sport,” said the governor of Río Negro, Arabela Carreras, during the presentation of the test in Buenos Aires, where she was accompanied by the president of the category, Aldo Morello and the driver from Bariloche with extensive experience in Argentine motorsports, Aixa Franke. “With this decision, we are changing the paradigm of this competition, where it is always mostly men who drive the vehicles,” added the provincial president.
For his part, Franke highlighted the importance of the proposal. “I am very happy and proud that Río Negro is the province that hosts this competition,” added the pilot. Meanwhile, Morelo made it clear that the race will be relevant for the development of the category that he presides over. “We are happy that they have chosen us to be part of this race, we are working on all the details so that all the pilots feel comfortable and in the best way”, added the leader. “Hopefully it will be the first of many races. This decision had a lot of repercussions and we hope that motorsport will once again be nurtured by women so that they can take the place they deserve,” concluded Morelo.
The competition in Río Negro will serve to remember the missing Copa Damas, a category that competed almost three decades ago and became the opening act for Turismo Carretera. Pilots such as Marisa Panagópulo, first champion and later TC runner, Cinthia Akel, Alejandra Bessone, Delfina Frers, María de los Ángeles Hanhcik, Karina Furlán, Roxana Tardito and Claudia Teatini, among others, participated in those championships aboard Nissan Sentra cars .
