A Turkish football club averted a significant financial payout by fielding Portuguese goalkeeper Ricardo Velho, whose debut performance, including a decisive last-minute save, secured a 2-1 victory and satisfied a crucial contractual clause.
Gençlerbirligi coach Volkan Demirel confirmed Velho’s surprise inclusion on Friday night was a direct result of a contract stipulation. The clause would have led to Velho’s departure and cost the club €200,000 (approximately $218,000) had he not played in the match against Basaksehir.
“We wanted to protect the club with this choice, and he did not disappoint us with his performance,” Demirel stated after the 12th league match.
Velho, on loan from Farense, arrived at Gençlerbirligi on the final day of the summer transfer window. He had been on the bench for seven consecutive games without playing before his Friday debut.
The coach also addressed the absence of the team’s regular starter, Ehran Erenturk. “Ehran is a very valuable goalkeeper for the club, and I am satisfied with him, but there was this contractual issue,” Demirel explained.
Velho himself praised the team’s effort after the victory. “It was a very important and valuable victory. We played against a strong opponent, with very good players, and we were good, justifying the three points,” he said, reportedly unaware of the contract details.
The win against Basaksehir helped Gençlerbirligi climb to 13th place in the Turkish league. This provisionally moved the club out of the relegation zone.
