Rianna Rios outduels Mary Romero in Highly Controversial Bout at Washington Venue

Puerto Lumbreras Boxer Suffers Defeat in International Fight

Puerto Lumbreras native Mary Romero, a three-time European super bantamweight champion, lost to American Rianna Rios in a fight for one of the World Boxing Association (WBA) international belts in Washington.

Romero, who is 39 years old and weighs 53.2 kilos, made her debut in the United States, where any result is magnified, with a record of 10 wins and 5 losses. Despite starting the fight well and dominating her opponent, Rios, 29 years old and 53 kilos, in the early rounds, the judges ultimately saw the fight in favor of the local boxer.

Romero was penalized with a point for a maneuver in which the referee believed she used her arms to lower her opponent’s head, and the judges scored the fight in favor of Rios by unanimous decision, with scores of 78-73 and 79-72.

Rios, who has accumulated a total of eight victories, emerged victorious in the fight, taking home the international belt. The loss is Romero’s fifth, and she will look to bounce back in her next fight.
