Victor Reyes and Riley Greene hit back-to-back homers in the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Saturday.
With one out in the ninth, Reyes tied the game against Royals reliever Joel Payamps (2-2). It was the first home run Payamps allowed in 26 1/3 innings this season. Greene followed with his first career home run.
Tigers reliever Joe Jimenez (3-0) pitched a perfect ninth inning and got the win after Detroit pitchers retired the last 17 batters they faced.
The Royals went up 2-0 on Hunter Dozier’s bases-loaded double in the first inning. Greene led off the bottom of that inning with a 3-pointer and scored on Javy Baez’s sacrifice fly.
Kansas City went up 3-1 in the fourth on Whit Merrifield’s RBI single.
The Tigers scored in the fifth on a walk by Greene, reached the third on a single by Miguel Cabrera and scored on a hit by Eric Haase.
For the Royals, Venezuelan Edward Olivares 3-0 with a run scored.
For the Tigres, Báez 3-0 with an RBI, Dominican Willy Castro 4-1. Venezuelans Cabrera 3-1 and Víctor Reyes 3-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
