Rennes: emergency medical staff on strike

The tone is rising at the Rennes University Hospital. A strike notice is announced “for an indefinite period”, said the caregivers, who demand more staff and materials.

Since the summer, the service has been confronted with record attendance, with an average of 200 patients seen every day. Emergency personnel are exhausted.

“We are facing sick leaves that must be replaced so we have to go back to our rest so we will not hold out like that indefinitely”, testifies Anne-Laure, night nurse in the emergency room.

The strikers are calling for three orderlies and two additional nurses. Management replied that 10 positions had been created in the past eighteen months.

In this already tense context, staff fear the consequences of a possible fifth wave. The intensive care unit went from 1 to 9 Covid patients in a week. Doctors, including the head of emergencies, are in solidarity with emergencies.
