Renewable Energy – How to make your home energy independent

The unprecedented rise in energy prices has made many people consider better alternatives for the planet and their pockets.

When we think of a self-sufficient home, we imagine a cabin in the mountains with a few small solar panels, two light bulbs, and a small refrigerator. But advances in technology are changing that picture.

Both single-family homes and apartments in a building can use a combination of solar panels, wind turbines and batteries to greatly reduce their dependence on energy, including becoming fully independent from the grid.

Battery technology has advanced in recent years and it is now easy to find high-capacity, fast-charging units that are capable of powering an entire home. Batteries can also help by charging when energy is cheaper and providing electricity at times of day when using the grid is more expensive.

Renewable energy installations can be amortized over about 10 years, and from that moment on, the electricity in that house can be considered free. On the other hand, installing batteries alone allows for great savings.

These are the three components that make it possible to install an energy-independent home:

wind turbines

They are the least common option for homes, but in certain geographic locations where the wind is more constant, they are a great alternative. All these systems can be controlled by intelligent systems that optimize load and consumption, and which can be controlled through an app.

Combined with other improvements such as the use of thermal insulation, heat pump heating, passive air conditioning (sun and shade, drafts), energy consumption can be reduced considerably, up to 10% of the consumption of a comparable home that does not use these techniques. All this means that the investment cost to make the house energy independent is even lower.

In the future, local and decentralized generation and storage of electricity will also prevent losses in the electricity grid. As a whole, these technologies could drastically reduce the planet’s emissions if they start to be massively implemented in the next few years.
