The Renault 5 is making a grand comeback, but it’s far from just a trip down memory lane. This modern electric car is pulling in a lot of new buyers. About 84% of its customers are completely new to the French brand. That’s a big win for Renault.
This high rate of new customers truly stands out. It’s one of the best conversion rates Renault has ever seen for any model. The car itself is redesigned for today’s roads and tomorrow’s challenges. It seems to be hitting all the right notes with buyers.
Renault looked closely at these numbers. They talked to about 1900 people who bought the Renault 5 in the United Kingdom. Around 1600 of these buyers had switched from a competitor’s car. Many came from other small cars. For example, 3.4% traded in a Mini Cooper. Another 3.8% moved on from a Ford Fiesta. And 4.4% decided to leave their Fiat 500 behind.
This redesigned classic, now electric, is a real hit. It has become the most popular electric vehicle for private buyers. Because of this success, Renault has climbed the sales charts. They are now the second-best selling EV brand in the UK, right behind Tesla, for private sales.
Adam Wood, who is the Managing Director of Renault UK, shared some insights with the British press. He said the most important thing about the Renault 5 is its “magic point.” He explained, “People see the car and, regardless of remembering the original, it’s simply an excellent design that makes people smile.” He believes the design works for everyone.
Wood also stressed that feelings play a big part in buying a car. “Emotion is also an important part of customer purchase,” he noted. This helps explain the incredibly high sales rate for the Renault 5. While many people traded in similar small cars, there isn’t one specific type of person buying the R5. It appeals to a wide variety of drivers.
The New Renault 5 Powers Ahead
The new Renault 5 faced a big challenge. Its older relative was hugely popular, selling over 9.5 million units between 1972 and 1996. The new electric car had to live up to that amazing history.
The current Renault 5 is a small electric car. It comes with a 52 kWh lithium-ion battery. This “comfort range” battery gives it a driving range of 410 kilometers (WLTP).
In the UK, where Renault did its analysis, the R5 has been a huge commercial success. Around 2400 units were delivered by the end of June, in its first few months on sale. In April and May, it was the top-selling electric vehicle for private customers. This helped make Renault the second-biggest retail EV brand in the country, just behind Tesla.
The Renault 5 also significantly boosted the French brand’s overall car market share in the UK. Renault’s share grew to 3.7%. Car registrations went up by 16% in the first half of 2025 compared to the year before. A 17% increase in private car sales played a part in this strong performance.

Adam Wood believes the affordable price is a factor in its popularity. But he also thinks the auto industry often overlooks emotional appeal. He shared, “It’s that design and fun that are also attracting more and more private individuals who perhaps weren’t considering electric vehicles.” Wood added, “In many ways, I think it’s like a Trojan horse to get more people to consider electric vehicles.” (Source: British press).
