Renato Almeida, a rising star in futsal, couldn’t hold back his joy. He told the FPF (Football Federation) about his deep pride. He had earned a spot on the U19 National team. Coach José Luís Mendes picked him for the European Championship squad. The team is now sharpening its skills. They are getting ready for the tournament, which starts on the 28th. Their Group A opponents include host Moldova, Italy, and Ukraine.
This young man, an 18-year-old winger, now plays for Elétrico on loan from Sporting. He understands the odds against him. “I feel truly privileged,” Almeida explained. “So many players pursue futsal, but only 14 make it to the Euros.” His journey began with a call for the qualifiers, which filled him with happiness. Getting the news about the final squad list felt even bigger. “My dream is happening,” he recalled thinking. “This is what I want, and it’s real.” He added, “Everything has gone well. It’s been very special.”
Almeida is brimming with belief in his team. He vividly remembers a time not long ago. “Two years back,” he shared, “I watched the U19 team win the championship. I cheered so hard, dreaming of being on that field myself.” Now, that dream is his reality. He feels confident they can defend their title. “If we follow our coach’s plan,” he insisted, “both in practice and in games, we will win again.” He believes the spirit of champions lives on. “Even with new faces, that winner’s drive remains,” Almeida added. “We just need to keep giving our all. Hard work is non-negotiable.”
With nine goals already under his belt for the U19 futsal squad, Almeida has a sharp answer. When asked about his favorite goal, he chuckled. “Honestly, I didn’t even realize I was one of the team’s top scorers,” he admitted with a grin. His eyes, however, are on the future. “My favorite goal,” he declared, “is the one I haven’t scored yet. Maybe it will be at the European Championship.” It’s a clear statement of intent.
