Reds snap Cubs’ win streak, Aristides Aquino hits 3-run homer

Jose Barrero hit a tiebreaking RBI single in Cincinnati’s three-run fifth inning, and the Reds snapped a five-game winning streak with an 8-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Aristides Aquino hit a three-run homer for Cincinnati, and Austin Romine hit a two-run double. It was Aquino’s first home run since he hit two against the Cubs on May 23.

It was the Reds’ highest-run game since an 8-2 win over Baltimore on July 30.

Joel Kuhnel (2-1) pitched two shutout innings to earn the win. Alexis Diaz struck out Nelson Velázquez and Ian Happ with the bases loaded in the eighth before recording his fifth save.

Cincinnati’s Joey Votto made his 1,989th career appearance, breaking a tie with Hall of Famer Larry Walker for the most Canadian-born players in major league history.

The teams combined for four home runs and 10 runs in the first four innings.

For the Reds, Mexican Alejo López 3-2 with an RBI. Colombian Donovan Solano 4-2 with two runs scored. The Dominican Arístides Aquino 4-1 with a run scored and three RBIs. Cuban José Barrero 4-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

For the Cubs, the Venezuelan Rafael Ortega 1-0. Puerto Rican Nelson Velázquez 2-1. Dominicans Franmil Reyes 5-1, Christopher Morel 3-1 with a run scored and an RBI. Brazilian Yan Gomes 3-1 with a run scored and two RBIs.
