Reddit is putting the brakes on its plans for paid content. Steve Huffman, the company’s CEO, recently shared that they’ve decided to hold off on letting Subreddit owners charge users to view special content. This decision comes as Reddit changes how it uses its people and money.
Last year, Huffman spoke about letting users create “exclusive” or private Subreddits. He even hinted that some of these might involve a payment system. He later suggested this feature would roll out sometime in 2025.
So, why the change of heart now? Huffman explained that Reddit needs to focus on what matters most. This means moving resources away from certain business areas. One such area is what he called “user monetization systems,” which included the idea of paid Subreddits.
Huffman emphasized that the company still believes in the idea of a payment system. However, for now, they must strengthen their main product. This involves making Reddit the top place for finding content. It also means speeding up the company’s growth around the globe. The teams previously working on building paid Subreddit features will now shift their attention to these core goals.
