Red Sea Tourist Submarine Sinks, Kills 6, Rescues 39 Near Egypt’s Hurghada

A tourist submarine called “Sinbad” sank in the Red Sea, off the coast of Egypt. Six people died. Rescue teams saved 39 others.

The submarine sank about 1 kilometer from the city of Hurghada, a popular tourist spot. This happened on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at around 10:00 AM.

The governor of the Red Sea area in Egypt confirmed the deaths. He also said that all 39 survivors were rescued and are safe. No one is missing.

Before this, the Russian embassy posted on Facebook that the submarine had 45 passengers, all from Russia. Victor Voropaev, a Russian diplomat in Hurghada, said that two of the people who died were children.

The BBC reported that, according to local sources, nine people were injured in the incident. Four of them are in critical condition and were taken to hospitals for treatment.

It’s still not clear what caused the submarine to sink. Weather reports said that on the morning of the incident, the skies were mostly clear, the wind was light, and the waves were about 0.2 meters high.
