Red Bull’s Shocking Move: What’s Behind Checo Pérez’s Sudden Exit

Financial Fallout of Pérez’s Departure

Red Bull Racing is facing significant financial repercussions following the termination of Checo Pérez’s contract. The team’s advisor, Helmut Marko, acknowledged that the decision has come at a substantial cost, both in terms of the team’s sporting performance and its economic impact.

Although Marko did not disclose the exact figures, it is reported that Pérez’s contract was renegotiated in the summer, and the team had to pay a substantial amount to terminate the agreement. The financial blow is further exacerbated by the team’s failure to secure the constructors’ title, which would have brought a significant financial prize.

Contractual Obligations

The termination of Pérez’s contract has resulted in a double financial blow for Red Bull. The team not only loses the financial prize that accompanies the constructors’ title but also had to pay a substantial amount to Pérez to terminate his contract. The performance clauses that would have limited the financial impact of his dismissal reportedly disappeared during his contract renewal.

Marko described the situation as “an acceptable result for both parties if the contracts are taken into account.” However, this diplomatic statement belies the fact that Red Bull had no other option but to pay a substantial amount to terminate Pérez’s contract.

Decline in Performance

Pérez’s decline in performance was a significant factor in the team’s decision to terminate his contract. Despite winning five races and finishing as runner-up in the world championship last year, Pérez failed to find his rhythm this season. He finished the campaign more than 280 points behind his teammate Max Verstappen, who became world champion with overwhelming dominance.

Marko’s criticism of Pérez was a constant during the season, increasing tension within the team. Although the RB20 was not the most competitive car for much of the year, Pérez’s performance fell below expectations. His inability to score key points in the constructors’ championship, combined with his poor effectiveness in qualifying and the race, sealed his fate.

Future Prospects

Pérez, who will be without a seat by 2025, is confident of staying close to Formula 1. Marko commented that Pérez still has hope in Formula 1, although all the seats for next year are closed. If Pérez sits on the sidelines for a year, as a veteran driver, there can always be new opportunities for him.

Red Bull, on the other hand, begins a new chapter with a different partner for Verstappen, in an attempt to return to the path of success in 2025. However, the team will do so carrying one of the most expensive bills in its history, both due to the dismissal of Pérez and the moral and economic blow of a third place in the constructors’ championship.
