“Record” budget for sport: 315 million in 2022

The Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, and the president of the Higher Sports Council (CSD), José Manuel Franco, presented today in Madrid the “record” figure that the 2022 budgets dedicate to sport, with 315 million allocated to the renewal and transformation of the sports model and an increase of 25% compared to 2021. With an endowment of 1,589 million for the ministry, which represents an increase of almost 40% in relation to this year, “it is the largest investment that has been made in culture and sports,” according to the minister.

“We are facing the largest investment in sports in the last thirty years, facing a historic milestone to face the challenge of the renewal and transformation of our sports model,” said Secretary of State, José Manuel Franco, that detailed the items for the CSD and stressed that the budgets reflect “the Government’s firm commitment to sport as an economic and social engine.” The budgets approved by the Government foresee a total figure of 315 million, after the sum of the ordinary budget of the CSD and the funds from the European Union for the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

The amount assigned to the CSD increases by 7 million that of this year, which will be dedicated “entirely to women’s sport, for the definitive impulse of the professional football league”, given that “equality in sport is and will be the priority objective of the legislature and the Government, “as stated. The item from the recovery funds, estimated at 107 million euros, also increases and within it a total of 31.8 million will be allocated entirely to the Social Plan for Sport and the development of sports policies for inclusion and equality.

Franco also detailed the increase experienced by subsidies to federations, which include almost 3 million more than in 2021 to amount to 55,886,750. Of these, 1,500,000 will be allocated to sports technification programs as a commitment to “a strong and innovative model for the preparation of high-performance athletes, with their sights already on the horizon of the Paris Olympic Games”. The Secretary of State indicated that the items created in 2021 for Sports and Women, of 2,550,000 ?, and of social aid to women of athletes, of 450,000, together with directed to the federations for inclusive sport projects (750,000) are maintained

The Executive’s project increases by 50% the aid to the federations for sports activities at school age and the autonomous communities will have a new item of one million for equipment of technification centers, that pursues the modernization and ecological transformation of the centers of public ownership. In his speech at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, Franco stressed that the Government has allocated almost one billion to the promotion of Spanish sport since 2019 and was convinced of the “immeasurable strength of the sports phenomenon to reactivate the country and the whole of the citizenship”.
