Received the National Research Awards for six men and four women

The Ministry of Science and Innovation awarded National Research Awards 2021. The winners of this edition are: Francisco José García Vidal, Hermenegildo García Gómez, Montserrat Vilà Planellas, Luis Vega González, María José Alonso Fernández, Jesús Fernando San Miguel Izquierdo, Purificación Muñoz Cánoves, Aníbal Ollero Baturone, Jordi Galí Garí -Andreus.

Created in 1982, the awards aim to recognize the merit of Spanish researchers who carry out outstanding professional work of international relevance and who contribute in an exceptional way to the advance of science, for a better knowledge of the human being and their coexistence, for the technology transfer and for the progress of humanity.

The total value of the prizes amounts to 300,000 euros, with an economic allocation of 30,000 euros for each of the categories, as reported by the ministry in a statement.

National Enrique Moles Award in the area of ​​Chemical Science and Technology

The professor at the Polytechnic University of Valencia was awarded in this modality Hermenegildo García Gómez, which carries out its research and teaching work at the Department of Chemistry and at the Institute of Chemical Technology at CSIC-UPV. The jury highlighted the extraordinary impact of his research in Chemical Sciences, namely in the field of photocatalysis, catalytic and photocatalytic reactivity of graphene and other carbon-based materials.

Alejandro Malaspina National Award in the area of ​​Science and Technologies of Natural Resources

The research professor at the Doñana Biological Station (EBD-CSIC) Montserrat Villa Planellas received this award for his contributions to the field of invasive alien species ecology and its application to ecosystem conservation. His studies are part of conservation biology and the effects of global changes on Mediterranean ecosystems, mainly on the factors that determine invasion by introduced species.

Julio Rey Pastor National Award in Mathematics and Information and Communication Technologies

Professor at the Department of Mathematics at the University of the Basque Country and Scientific Director of the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM), Luis Vega Gonzalez, received the award in this modality. The jury recognizes with this distinction the excellence of its research work and its applications to the study of harmonic analysis for dispersive differential equations, which have had a unique scientific impact in the field of Mathematics.

Juan de la Cierva National Award in the area of ​​Technology Transfer

In this modality has already received the award maria jose alonso fernandez, Professor at the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Santiago de Compostela and head of the Nanobiofar group at the Singular Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CiMUS). With this distinction, the excellence of his scientific career in the field of nanomedicine is recognized, as well as his important contribution to the adequate and balanced transfer of technology and knowledge.

Gregorio Marañón National Prize in the field of Medicine

This award was given to Jesus Fernando San Miguel Out, Director of Clinical and Translational Medicine at the University of Navarre, Medical Director of the University of Navarre Clinic and specialist in Hematology and Hemotherapy. The award recognizes his pioneering contribution to biomedical research, which has produced, among others, a paradigm shift in the conception of pathologies such as multiple myeloma and its treatments.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal National Prize in Biology

Has already been awarded in this modality Muñoz Cánoves Purification, Professor of Cell Biology at Pompeu Fabra University, Research Professor at ICREA and Principal Researcher at the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC). The award recognizes the contribution of his stem cell research in the areas of muscle regeneration and aging, as well as the application of his discoveries in the treatment of different pathologies such as muscular dystrophy.

Leonardo Torres Quevedo National Award in Engineering

In this modality, the Robotics professor and director of the Robotics, Vision and Control Group (GRVC) of the University of Seville, Aníbal Ollero Baturone, who is scientific advisor of the Advanced Center for Aerospace Technologies FADA-CATEC. This distinction recognizes the excellence of its research activity in different areas of the Engineering area, highlighting the development of autonomous systems in various sectors.

National Pascual Madoz Award in the areas of Law and Economic and Social Sciences

The professor of Economics and Business at the University Pompeu Fabra and senior researcher at the Center for Research in International Economics was awarded in this modality Jordi Galí Garreta. This award recognizes the contribution of his research in macroeconomics to the field of monetary policy through the introduction of new dynamic models of general equilibrium.

National Ramón Menéndez Pidal Award in the Humanities

Research Professor at ICREA at the Department of Prehistory, Ancient History and Archeology at the University of Barcelona Margarita Díaz-Andreu García was awarded in this modality. She received this distinction for the quality, creativity and international impact of her research career in the field of archeology, highlighting her contributions to gender studies and pioneering work in the field of archaeoacoustics.

In addition to these awards, the Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, announced that in 2022 the National Research Awards aimed exclusively at young people. “With this new call, we will be able to visualize scientific careers that are also brilliant, but still young, and provide them with extra initial funding”, explained the minister.
