Real Madrid, with goals from Alaba and Benzema, win the Super Cup

This time there were only two goals.

David Alaba scored in the first half, Karim Benzema did the same in the second and Real Madrid won the UEFA Super Cup by beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 on Wednesday.

Alaba opened the scoring with a shot in front of goal in the 37th minute. In a corner kick, Benzema finished off with a header and the Brazilian Casemiro executed another header near the goal line, to return the ball towards the center of the area, where the Austrian defined.

At 65, Frenchman Benzema ensured Madrid tied a record, with five Super Cup titles, thanks to an assist from a dynamic Vinícius Júnior.

It was Benzema’s 324th goal for Madrid, surpassing those achieved by the legendary Raúl with the Whites. Only Cristiano Ronaldo achieved more, 450, from 2009 to 2018.

But the match between Madrid, champion of the Champions League, and Frankfurt, champion of the Europa League, did not lavish the spectacle of their previous meeting.

The two teams had only played one competitive match, in 1960 during the European Cup final, when Alfredo Di Stéfano scored three goals and Ferenk Puskás added four. The Merengue team then gave a 7-3 win and won the continental crown for the fifth consecutive time.

Erwin Stein, who then scored for Frankfurt, was in Helsinki to witness the reissue, 62 years later, as was his former teammate Dieter Stinka. But it was José Santamaria, 93 years old and the only member of Madrid who survives from that final in Glasgow, who achieved another victory.
