Real Madrid qualify for the last 16 in the Champions League

Real Madrid advanced to the last 16 of the Champions League for the 25th consecutive season after easily beating the Sheriff 3-0 on Wednesday.

David Alaba, Toni Kroos and Karim Benzema all scored to secure the Spanish powerhouse’s place in the next round with one match remaining in Group D.

The result eliminated any aspirations to the Sheriff, the Moldovan club that debuted in the group stage and surprised Real Madrid with a victory in their first meeting in Madrid.

It was the fifth consecutive win for Madrid in all competitions and reached 12 points in five games, two points more than Inter Milan, who are second, and who also advanced. Inter beat Shakhtar 2-0 at home. The Sheriff remained with six units.

The Sheriff could have advanced with a win against Madrid and the defeat of Inter. They started the group stage with wins in a row before losing two in a row to Inter.

The Sheriff started the game with 12 wins in his last 13 home games in all competitions and 10 of those without conceding.

Madrid, who have won 13 European titles, have reached the knockout stage in a row since the 1997-98 season. He did not qualify for the tournament in 1996-97.
