Real Madrid Officially Parts Ways with Dennis Smith JR

Real Madrid has officially announced the departure of American point guard Dennis Smith Jr. through a statement. Smith Jr. joined the team last January but only managed to play a total of 35 minutes and 18 seconds in four games, split between the Endesa League and the Euroleague.

Career with Real Madrid

During his brief stint with the team, Smith Jr. accumulated 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Real Madrid has wished him well in his future endeavors, stating, “Real Madrid and Dennis Smith Jr. have agreed to end their link with our club. Real Madrid wishes you good luck in this new stage of your life.”

Coach’s Perspective

The news of Smith Jr.’s departure was foreshadowed by coach Chus Mateo in a press conference last Wednesday. Mateo reflected on the challenges Smith Jr. faced, saying, “Dennis arrived at a time that was not easy for us; it was very little time before the cup.” He had to make an effort to get fit after being stopped for a long time and has not had the adaptation that he would have liked, nor has he adapted to our way of doing basketball.” Mateo also acknowledged that if Smith Jr. had joined at the beginning of the season, he might have entered a better dynamic, but ultimately, the decision was made for him to take a different path as he felt he couldn’t meet the team’s demands.
