Real Madrid dominates the classic and recovers the league leadership

Real Madrid emerged as the leader of the League this Sunday after beating Barcelona 3-1 at the Bernabéu in the classic game on matchday 9 of the Spanish championship, in which Benzema was once again on target.

The French striker opened the scoring (12) and the Uruguayan Fede Valverde made it 2-0 (35), before Ferran Torres closed the gap (83) and Rodrygo made it 3-1 from a penalty (90+1), which leaves Real Madrid the sole leader of the League.

Benzema, the main candidate for the Ballon d’Or on Monday, found himself again with the goal after more than a month and a half without scoring in a start to the season hampered by injuries.

The Frenchman, who saw a second goal disallowed for offside (52), ended up winning the duel of gunners against Robert Lewandowski.

The defeat is a blow to the Catalans who, with a foot and a half out of the Champions League, trusted in this match to achieve an injection of morale.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, with its ticket to the Champions League round of 16 sealed, is now also the leader of Laliga.

Hours before, Real Sociedad won 2-1 at Celta to get into the Champions zone.

Asier Illarramendi opened the scoring for the Basques with a shot from the edge of the box (30), but shortly after Iago Aspas equalized taking advantage of a mistake made by Real’s defense (39). Already in the second half, Igor Zubeldia made it 2-1 with a header (54).

The victory allows Real Sociedad to snatch fourth place in the league table from Athletic Bilbao, getting into the Champions zone, while Celta remains in the middle of the table.
