RCB Sale: Team Valued at 17,000 Crore Rupees, IPL’s Largest Deal

The Royal Challengers Bangalore, winners of the 18th season of the Indian Premier League, are up for sale. Currently owned by United Spirits Limited, a company that produces McDowell’s whiskey, the team may change hands soon. According to a Bloomberg report, United Spirits Limited is preparing to sell the RCB. If the sale goes through, it will be the biggest deal in IPL history, with the owners expecting a hefty sum.

The reported sale price? A whopping 17,000 crore rupees, or approximately 2 billion dollars. To put that into perspective, when the IPL first started in 2008, the RCB was valued at around 476 crore rupees, or 111.6 million dollars. Back then, it was the second-most expensive team in the league. Vijay Mallya, the former owner of United Spirits Limited, had initially owned the team. However, after Mallya’s financial downfall, the British company Diageo acquired a significant stake in United Spirits Limited and eventually bought out the RCB in 2016.

If the RCB sells for 17,000 crore rupees, it will shatter all previous records. The largest deals in IPL history pale in comparison, with the RPSG Group buying the Lucknow Super Giants for 7,090 crore rupees and CVC Capital acquiring the Gujarat Titans for 5,625 crore rupees. The sale of the RCB would mark a new era for the team and the IPL as a whole.
