Raquel Peña and Almonte will open the Conference of Mining Ministries of the Americas

Vice President Raquel Peña and the Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte. will lead the opening ceremony of the XII Annual Conference of Mining Ministries of the Americas (CAMMA) to be held in Santo Domingo tomorrow and Wednesday with the participation of representatives of 23 governments of the region who will exchange knowledge and experiences in public management mining.

The event will begin -at 8:45 am on Tuesday, October 18, with opening speeches by Vice President Raquel Peña and Minister Antonio Almonte, who will address the value of the national extractive industry in terms of employability, stability of public finances, foreign exchange generation, technology transfer and social responsibility.

The rooms of the Sheraton hotel, on the Malecón in Santo Domingo, will serve as the setting for this international conclave -considered the most important in the mining sector of the Americas- that seeks to highlight mining as a key vector for the integral development of the States.

Other authorities will also take part in the XII CAMMA Conference, among them: Víctor Bisonó Haza, Minister of Industry and Commerce; Cristine Laberge, Ambassador of Canada; Mark Bristow, Chairman of Barrick Gold; Juana Barceló, president of Barrick Pueblo Viejo and Rafael Poveda, consultant to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

Also speaking will be Elizabeth Mena, president of the Dominican Association of Exporters (Adoexpo) and executive vice president of Cormidom; Adan Olivares, from the Responsible Mining Assurance Initiative and Pierre Pasquale, from the National Resource Governance Institute.

During the work sessions, this multilateral forum on mining policy will have as its main focus of analysis sustainable mining and the search for mechanisms that facilitate inter-institutional communication among the actors in the sector.

CAMMA is a propitious space to improve the governance of mineral resources, strengthen eco-sustainable commitments and underline the contribution of mining to the achievement of the so-called “Millennium Goals”.
