Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh is currently embroiled in controversy following an incident at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 in Goa. The actor is facing accusations of hurting religious sentiments. This backlash comes ahead of his upcoming film, ‘Dhurandhar’.
The controversy stems from Singh mimicking a scene from the Kannada film ‘Kantara Chapter 1’ during the festival’s closing ceremony. He was allegedly making light of Chavundi (Chamunda) Devi, a revered demigod. Social media users have widely criticized his actions.
During the event, Singh praised ‘Kantara’ director-actor Rishab Shetty, who was also present. Singh expressed his admiration for Shetty’s performance, particularly the scene where a female deity is depicted entering the protagonist’s body.
After praising the film, Singh proceeded to mimic the scene himself on stage. He then asked the audience if they would like to see him in ‘Kantara 3’, gesturing towards Shetty.
A video of the incident quickly went viral, drawing strong reactions from netizens. Many users expressed outrage, labeling the mimicry as disrespectful and an insult to the deity.
There’s a reason why today’s actors should be kept away from promotions . They end up creating controversy 🤦♂️#Dhurandhar #RanveerSingh pic.twitter.com/ROynqG8YzG

Several social media users pointed out that Singh misidentified the entity as a “ghost” rather than a demigod. They emphasized that Chavundi is a goddess, not a spectral being.
Dear @RanveerOfficial it’s not a ghost it’s a Demigod (Chavundi) ✅
You appreciate Rishab shetty for his acting that’s good, but don’t imitate like Demigod 🙌@shetty_rishab #KantaraChapter1 pic.twitter.com/ubFDJiSZC4— Filmy Kannada (@Filmy_Kannada_) November 29, 2025
Critics also questioned why Rishab Shetty did not intervene during Singh’s mimicry. One user noted that Singh’s performance felt “unnecessary and disrespectful.”
#AdityaDhar had done many good things in his life but giving stage to #RanveerSingh is not one of them.
Blud Literally mocked our Chamunda Devi, and Shame on #rishabhshetty that he didn’t beat the shit out of him on stage. #Dhurandhar pic.twitter.com/hCnrh6pGXu

The widespread condemnation highlights the sensitivity surrounding religious portrayals in public forums.
