Rangers has appointed 36-year-old German coach Danny Rohl, bringing an elite European football pedigree to the Scottish club as it seeks to reverse a poor start to its season.
Rohl signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, the club announced on Monday. His immediate challenge will be to guide the team in a Europa League match on Thursday against Norway’s Brann.
He takes over from Russell Martin, who was dismissed after the team won just five of 18 games this season. Rangers currently sits in sixth place in the Scottish league.
Rangers said Rohl “brings experience from some of the top environments in European football.” The young coach vowed to make an immediate impact.
“It is a great privilege to become coach of a fantastic and world-renowned club,” Rohl stated. “I know it has been a difficult start to the season, but there is still a lot to play for in the four competitions we are involved in. We have no time to lose.”
Rohl previously served as assistant to Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich, where they won the German league, cup, and Champions League treble in the 2019-2020 season. He later followed Flick to the German national team, including for the 2022 World Cup.
Before this appointment, Rohl spent two seasons as head coach of Sheffield Wednesday, successfully keeping the club in England’s second tier.
His coaching career began at Leipzig, and he later worked as an assistant to Ralph Hasenhuttl at Southampton.
Rangers is currently an opponent of FC Porto and Sporting de Braga in the Europa League. The club has not yet secured any points in the league phase of the competition.
Rangers will host Sporting de Braga on November 27. The team will then visit FC Porto on January 29.
