Anyone who caught the big-screen take on Borderlands probably walked away with some thoughts on its quality. Most agree it wasn’t a smash hit. Interestingly, Randy Pitchford, a key figure behind the game, believes it could have been even worse if he had steered the ship himself.
“It would have been way worse,” Pitchford remarked recently at gamescom 2025, talking about the film. “I’m not a filmmaker. Eli Roth is a truly great filmmaker. Honestly, if I had directed it, it would have been a total disaster.” He openly shared his view with PC Gamer during the event.

Even with Pitchford’s kind words for Eli Roth taking on the director’s chair, the movie’s performance speaks for itself. It only pulled in $33 million globally. That’s a steep loss when you consider its $100 million production budget. Both professional critics and everyday viewers gave it harsh reviews, too. Some folks even went as far as to call the Borderlands film a serious offense to the art of cinema.
Despite that cinematic misstep, the gaming world is buzzing about something else entirely. Borderlands 4, the next main game in the series, is slated to arrive this month. Players are showing a lot of interest in this new title. Perhaps a great game can help everyone forget about the movie. Will it hit the mark? We will all find out on September 12th. The game is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
