He wanted to do this movie with his friend Raj Kapoor, but at the time Raj Kapoor was sick. For this reason, Hrishikesh da dropped the idea of ​​casting Raj Kapoor in his film. After this, he spoke to Bengali movie superstars from Uttam Kumar to Shashi Kapoor and Kishore Kumar for this role, but was unable to speak to anyone. Meanwhile, Kaká found out about the film ‘Anand’ through Gulzar, the mutual friend of Rajesh Khanna and Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

After hearing the entire script for the film from Gulzar, Rajesh Khanna liked the role of ‘Anand’ very much and decided that he had to play this role at all costs. When Rajesh Khanna arrived at Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Rishikesh was very surprised to see him because, Rajesh Khanna was a superstar, his own demand to work in the film surprised Hrishikesh. At the same time, after hosting blockbuster movies like ‘Aradhana’ and ‘Do Raaste’, Rajesh Khanna used to charge around Rs 8 lakh for each movie and ‘Anand’ was a low budget movie.

When Rajesh Khanna expressed his desire to work in the film ‘Anand’ opposite Hrishikesh Mukherjee, he put some conditions in front of Kaká. First, you will be able to pay only Rs 1 lakh for this movie. Second, he would be on time every day for the shoot and the third condition was that many dates would have to be given for the film. Rajesh Khanna really wanted to work on this film, so he agreed to all of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s conditions.
