He wanted to do this movie with his friend Raj Kapoor, but at the time Raj Kapoor was sick. For this reason, Hrishikesh da dropped the idea of casting Raj Kapoor in his film. After this, he spoke to Bengali movie superstars from Uttam Kumar to Shashi Kapoor and Kishore Kumar for this role, but was unable to speak to anyone. Meanwhile, Kaká found out about the film ‘Anand’ through Gulzar, the mutual friend of Rajesh Khanna and Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

After hearing the entire script for the film from Gulzar, Rajesh Khanna liked the role of ‘Anand’ very much and decided that he had to play this role at all costs. When Rajesh Khanna arrived at Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Rishikesh was very surprised to see him because, Rajesh Khanna was a superstar, his own demand to work in the film surprised Hrishikesh.
