Raimel Tapia drives in three, Blue Jays beat Guardians

George Springer and Raimel Tapia drove in three runs apiece in the first four innings off Shane Bieber, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cleveland Guardians 8-3 on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Starter Kevin Gausman (3-1) pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run and striking out five. The right-hander gave away his first walk of the season against his 137th batter of the year, Franmil Reyes, in the fourth inning, after 35 1/3 innings without a walk.

Toronto scored four times in the second and three in the fourth against Bieber (1-2), the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner.

Bieber tied a career low, allowing seven runs in 3 1/3 innings. He didn’t get a single strikeout for the first time in 86 career starts and 88 total appearances.

Tapia opened the scoreboard in the second inning with a two-run single. Springer followed with a double to left field that drove in Alejandro Kirk and Tapia.

Toronto reached five men in a row after two outs.

For the Blue Jays, the Dominicans Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 4-1, Santiago Espinal 2-1 with two runs scored, Tapia 5-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Cuban Lourdes Gurriel Jr. 4-1.

For the Guardians, the Dominicans José Ramírez 3-1, Reyes 3-1, Amed Rosario 4-0. The Venezuelan Andrés Giménez 1-0.
