Rafael Nadal falls in three sets in his last match of 2022

Rafael Nadal capped off an up-and-down 2022 year with a 3-6, 3-6, 6-4 loss to Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the mixed-team United Cup tournament on Saturday.

Nadal won the Australian Open and French Open this year to bring his total Grand Slam singles titles to a record 22. But injuries to his foot, rib and abdomen meant he played just four tournaments after Wimbledon in July. .

I was not sad about the loss on Saturday.

“It was not a disaster,” Nadal acknowledged. “I can do things better and I need to. But like I said, I haven’t had many matches. I think he played the first match two years ago. It’s an advantage, especially when you win like he did.”

Norrie had never won a set in his previous four meetings with Nadal.

“It was pretty crazy, I thought, I’ve never won a set before and so I wanted to go out there and first of all achieve that,” Norrie said. “It was a very physical match and I enjoyed it. A great finish to 2022 for me.”

The United Kingdom led 2-0 heading into Sunday’s games after Katie Swan beat Nuria Parrizas-Díaz of Spain 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

World top-ranked Iga Swiatek beat Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 6-3 in Brisbane. Poland and Kazakhstan are tied 1-1 going into the final three meetings on Sunday.

“The first duels of the season you are always a little rusty. I am happy that at the important moment I composed myself”, indicated Swiatek.

In Perth, Bulgaria and Belgium are tied 1-1 after the first day. Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria edged past David Goffin 6-4, 7-5, after Alison Van Uytvanck beat Isabella Shinikova 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 to give Belgium the lead.

Hours earlier Jiri Lehecka finished 6-4, 6-2 to upset Alexander Zverev (12) and help the Czech Republic lead 2-0.

Marie Bouzkova then defeated Jule Niemeier 6-2, 7-5 in the second game to put the Czechs up 2-0. Petra Kvitova, the top Czech in the world rankings, could give them victory by defeating Laura Siegemund on Sunday.
