Quranic teacher suspected of raping 27 schoolgirls arrested in Senegal

A Koranic teacher suspected of having raped 27 of his schoolgirls was arrested on Monday in Touba (Senegal) after several weeks on the run. The man “presented himself to the police”, was questioned and then “made available to the gendarmerie”, according to a police official.

Victims had lodged a complaint at the beginning of the year by producing medical certificates. The Koranic master, whose age was not given, had disappeared when the affair broke out. The 27 rapes were spread over time, said the police chief without further details.

Another rape case at the end of May

The victims are “minors”, which suggests that they were under 15 years old. The Koranic school where the suspect worked has been closed, according to local press. The affair broke out when one of the girls refused to return to school because the Koranic teacher “had sex with her and all the other girls”, according to local media.

The case coincides within a few days with the verdict against the opponent Ousmane Sonko, accused of having raped an employee of a beauty salon in Dakar. The man was acquitted at the end of May of the rape charges but was sentenced to two years in prison for having pushed the young woman to attacks on morality.

This case made headlines for two years. But the issue of sexual violence has been relegated to the background, as the file has been politicized. In Senegal, rape was only criminalized by Parliament in 2020.
