The Dominican Football Federation (Fedofútbol) expressed its regret over the death of Fortunato-Quispe-Mendoza, who was part of the institution’s executive for several years.
Don Quispe Mendoza, who was 88 years old, died this Friday at a medical center in the capital.
“Dominican soccer has lost its greatest icon. Quispe represented the purest of Dominican soccer,” said the president of Fedofútbol, Rubén García.
Don Quispe was the founder of the first soccer association in the country and the first coach of a national team. He founded and was the first coach of the Inter-School Soccer League in 1966, he created and was the leader of the National Children and Youth Soccer League (1967).
“Quispe was the first person who believed in Dominican soccer, he was the first person who thought of playing soccer in the country,” Garcia added, through a Fedofútbol press release.
“He was that person who grew up and lived loving football until his last day,” says Garcia, who stressed that the immortal Dominican sport “was a great bulwark for Dominican football.”
In 1968 he founded and coached and mentored the first division team of Aurora, where each player was genuinely Dominican.
By 1969 he founded and was the first coach of the UASD first division team, he was responsible for the creation of the first Soccer Association of the Dominican Republic, in the capital city, on August 6, 1970.
He was the promoter and founder of several associations and clubs in a large part of the national territory, teaching football throughout the national geography.
As a national coach, he directed the qualifiers for the Mexico ’68 World Cup, the XI Central American and Caribbean Games in Panama (1970), the VI Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia, in 1971; the Concacaf Youth Soccer Championship in Cuba, 1972; the XII Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo in 1974 and the Concacaf Youth Soccer Championship in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1976, among other achievements as a manager.
On May 21, 2004, in France, the International Federation of Associated Football honored him by awarding him as Football Character of the Century, on the occasion of the FIFA Centenary.
Quispe Mendoza arrived in the Dominican Republic in the turbulent months of 1965, specifically on May 4 as the international labor representative of the ILO at the time. He was born in the city of Cochabamba, in Bolivia, on October 7, 1934.
Upon his arrival, he taught as a professor of social sciences at the Juan Pablo Duarte high school, at the National School of Physical Education (ENEF), professor at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) and technician of the National Directorate of School Physical Education, among others. others.
He graduated in Political Science, Secondary Education with a mention in Social Sciences and in Physical Education with a mention in Soccer.
He is immortal in Dominican sports since 2011, as a promoter.
