Qualcomm solves the biggest problems of fingerprint readers

The implementation of the fingerprint reader under the screen was one of the biggest innovations that gradually allowed to create a smartphone with a full screen. Initially slower than the traditional readers present on the back and / or side of smartphones, these solutions gradually became more reliable and faster to recognize and unlock the phone.

Among the companies that helped the most to develop this technology is the North American Qualcomm, which now presents a new generation of fingerprint readers integrated into the screen. It is a new generation ultrasonic reader that promises to be larger (larger reading area), faster and even more secure than the iterations in use.

Qualcomm’s new Sonic Max 3D ultrasonic player arrives


The technology ensures not only fast recognition of registered fingerprints, but also a satisfactory way to unlock the smartphone. At the same time, it frees up the screen so that manufacturers can offer a perfect design.

In fact, this is one of the most popular solutions among Android manufacturers. In fact, we see this type of sensor, from the most varied iterations, applied to mid-range smartphones, more common, of course, in high-end smartphones.


Now that Qualcomm North American has released, by press release, a new generation of this system. The problem is the 3D Sonic Max sensor with a larger recognition / scan area, as well as support for two simultaneous fingerprints. In addition, it guarantees faster processing and recognition, as well as greater reading precision.

According to Qualcomm, the new 3D Sonic Max technology can work even when the screen is dirty. That is, even when we have some moisture, sweat, oil or slight dirt to cover and / or cover the area where the fingerprint reader integrated into the screen usually resides.

Also in keeping with American technology, we have significant improvements in registration, recognition, security, and convenience brought by the new type of reader.

3D Sonic Max

Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Max sensor uses three-dimensional ultrasonic technology to further map and authenticate the peaks and valleys that make up our fingerprint topography.

In fact, even if the finger is wet, the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Max sensor can pass through this barrier of obstacles, in addition to the screen glass, to ensure fast and reliable recognition of registered impressions.

But there is more news. By featuring a larger reading / scanning surface, the easier it will be to hit the exact area to unlock the smartphone. In other words, the user experience is beneficial.

According to Qualcomm, the reading area of ​​the new sensor is 17 times larger than that of the first generations. This allows the sensor to collect more recognition / mapping points and thus unlock our smartphone in just 0.2 seconds.

Dual Fingerprint Recognition for Android Smartphones


With a large fingerprint recognition / reading area, Qualcomm’s new Sonic Max 3D ultrasonic sensor enables simultaneous two-finger authentication. This can be used, for example, for banking applications.

In other words, whenever the user wants to apply an extra layer of security, they can take advantage of the biometric capabilities of the new 3D Sonic Max sensor.

At the same time, this will also allow parents who want to apply some locks, or make their authentication imperative to access some applications and / or phone settings, will be able to take advantage of this function.

Finally, Qualcomm’s new sensor features an extremely slim design, occupying only 0.2mm thick on smartphones where it will be applied.

The new North American technology solution will be applied, from now on, gradually to the next high-end smartphones that hit the market in 2022.
