The ransomware group known as Qilin has taken credit for a cyberattack against Asahi Group Holdings. Asahi is a major Japanese company that makes beer and other beverages. This attack reportedly stopped their production of drinks.
On October 7, Qilin posted what they claimed was proof of the hack. They shared 29 images on their website. The group stated these pictures were internal company documents from Asahi Group. Qilin is known for running a platform that offers ransomware services to other attackers.
The group also boasted about stealing a significant amount of data. They said they took more than 9,300 files from Asahi’s systems. This data reportedly totaled around 27 gigabytes.
However, Asahi Breweries, the beer-making division of Asahi Group, made its own announcement. On October 6, they confirmed that beer production had resumed. This restart happened at six of their breweries on October 2.
Qilin first gained notoriety in 2022. Since then, the group claims to be behind 870 cyber incidents. One particularly serious attack targeted Synnovis, a medical diagnostic system. That incident led to patient deaths at a London hospital.
