Qatar plans to imitate City’s network

Turned into a French football liner, about to become the first team to win eleven Ligue 1 titles, the Qatar-ruled PSG has begun expanding Qatar Sports Investments, the club’s sovereign wealth fund, to follow the model that City Football Group has set in world football. The objective is to establish a network of satellite teams to foster the development of youngsters and to empower the parent company, PSG, in its quest for the Champions League.

In 2022, QSI has already formalized the acquisition of 30% of the shares of Sporting de Braga. The Portuguese team was the second team in which the Qatari investment fund invested after PSG, for which it paid 50 million euros in 2011 and who has become the best team in France, not in Europe. Timeshare has allowed different young players from the academy to go on loan to Portugal, as well as encouraging the exchange of players in the short term.

Sporting de Braga is the first of many clubs that Qatar has monitored. Málaga is the second, although the investment is expected to be more complicated due to the judicial process in which the whole of the Costa del Sol is immersed. Al-Thani, its owner, is skeptical about a possible sale, Therefore, despite the fact that there is interest, confirmed by Al Khelaïfi, the negotiations will not bear fruit, far from it, in just weeks.

Qatar, meanwhile, continues to look for satellite teams with which it can increase profits and with which it can nurture PSG with talent. The paradigmatic case of timeshare is Manchester City, which has nine entities attached to the City Football Group, chaired by Ferrán Soriano, and whose model has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years.

In Brazil, Europe and South America, different investments have already been spotted to try to increase the reach of Qatar Sports Investments. The investment, in any case, would not have any consequences with respect to PSG, with which he remains committed, nor to Manchester United, with whom they are in the middle of the acquisition phase and whose investment would not affect, at all, the one made in the capital as a whole. Qatar continues to try, in the eyes of the world, to become a great power in the football industry.
