Pujols didn’t play, St. Louis is 9 1/2 ahead, has won 20 of 23 at home

Tommy Edman hit a two-out, two-run double to end a five-run ninth inning for the St. Louis Cardinals, who beat the Washington Nationals 6-5 on Wednesday.

St. Louis sits 9 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee for the lead in the NL Central after winning 20 of their last 23 home games.

Edman doubled to left off reliever Kyle Finnegan (5-3) to cap the cartwheel.

Paul Goldschmidt homered for the 35th time, hitting a solo shot off Cory Abbott leading off the fourth inning. Goldschmidt leads the National League with 108 RBIs.

He’s one home run away from tying his career high.

Jordan Montgomery had another solid start with his new team, allowing one run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings. He went without a decision on a night in which he struck out six, gave up two walks and left the game tied 1-1.

For the Nationals, Mexican Joey Meneses 5-1 with a run scored and an RBI. The Dominicans Nelson Cruz 3-1 with two runs scored, Victor Robles 2-1. The Venezuelans César Hernández 3-1 with an RBI, Ildemaro Vargas 4-0.

For the Cardinals, Puerto Rican Yadier Molina 4-2 with an RBI.
